Frosted Sugar Cookie Recipe

As children these were the cookies my siblings and I left for Santa each year. These cookies always meant Christmas at my house. When I was little this was the cookie my family prepared each Christmas, and usually only at Christmas time. We’d make dozens of cookies cutting them into stars, Santa, and tree shapes and frosting them with red and green frosting. The Santa cookies went first because they were bigger.

Here’s how you make the Driggs Family Frosted Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shortening
  • 2 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 TBSP milk
  • 6 cups flour
  • 4 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt

How to Make Frosted Sugar Cookies

  1. Cream together the shortening, sugar, vanilla.
  2. Add the eggs and beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Add and mix in 4 TBSP milk
  4. Mix in flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Divide the dough into manageable pieces and chill 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  7. Roll out to 1/8″ thickness on a floured surface.
  8. Cut out cookies using a cookie cutter.
  9. Bake on greased, or parchment lined, cookie sheet for 8 to 10 minutes.
  10. Cool and frost with butter cream frosting.

Helpful Hints

If you are using parchment paper you can roll the cookies out right on the parchment paper. Cut out the shapes and then pull away the excess. Slide the parchment paper onto the cookie sheet and bake. Super easy!
